A DECADE IN THE MUNICIPAL DIVISION
Ryan Howse – Superintendent of Municipal Division
The idea of sharing the stories of GS Construction employees began as a simple curiosity. Having worked alongside our Team for so many years, witnessing the growth of those around us, both in skill and character, it only seemed natural to want to hear more. What motivates our employees? What keeps them dedicated, year after year, to their craft and to our company?
Today, we pull back the curtain to introduce you to Ryan Howse, our Superintendent of the Municipal Division. Ryan brings a wealth of experience to the infrastructure rehabilitation industry, having worked with various companies over the years, but GS Construction has been his longest tenure. Much like Mitchell Prince’s journey, Ryan’s story began at the age of 18 as a green labourer, completely new to the industry.
Without a clear career direction, Ryan was fortunate to have a friend working as a track loader operator at the time. Following the friend’s recommendation, he started working with Blue-Con in Calgary, without ever imagining it would become a long-term career. However, as the years passed, Ryan found himself increasingly drawn to the Water and Sewer industry. The challenges it presented intrigued him and the satisfaction of seeing a project through to completion gave Ryan a deep sense of accomplishment. This was the turning point. Ryan realized he had found his place in the underground infrastructure world.
After two years as a labourer, two as a topman, four as a pipelayer, and two as a foreman, Ryan felt ready for a new chapter. He asked around Calgary for recommendations on reputable companies in the industry, and all paths led to GS Construction. A family-oriented, growing company that genuinely cares about its employees – that’s what convinced Ryan to make the move to Edmonton and join the GS Team. Now, 12 years later, Ryan has spent the majority of his career with us (two years as a foreman and 10 years as a Superintendent) and he continues to thrive.
When asked what he enjoys most about his work, Ryan’s answer is always the same: diversity. Our Municipal Division takes on projects across Central and Northern Alberta, allowing him to experience different places while helping communities improve and grow their infrastructure. Some of Ryan’s favourite projects include work in Acheson for Amazon, storm works in Jasper, and the Cave and Basin project in Banff. The list is extensive, with projects spanning from as far North as Slave Lake to as far South as High River, from Lloydminster in the East to Jasper in the West. Like Johnny Cash, Ryan’s been everywhere, though instead of singing, he’s been laying pipes. In fact, Ryan could easily recall 35 projects he’s proud to have been part of, with many more coming to mind.
What truly stands out about Ryan’s journey is his unwavering sense of ownership and responsibility. After so many years in the industry and with GS, Ryan takes pride not only in the projects themselves but in the people he works with. He knows that underground infrastructure is more than just pipes and trenches – it’s about relationships. Whether working with contractors, foremen or field crews, Ryan’s ability to communicate and keep things on track is what ensures the success of every project. While the company may own the project, on-site, it feels like Ryan’s. His accountability and leadership are clear in everything he does.
We are proud to have Ryan as part of the GS Construction Team and his story is a testament to the dedication and skill that drives our company forward.
