Turning Points and New Beginnings
Josh Amyotte – Project Manager of Drainage Division
‘I think there is something rewarding about driving the streets you have previously worked on knowing you played an important role in keeping the city running.’
Our series of employee stories continues, offering a glimpse into the unique paths and unexpected turns that have shaped careers at GS Construction. We’re kicking off the new year by sharing the inspiring journey of Josh Amyotte, Project Manager in the Drainage Division.
Josh’s story with GS began in 2013 at age 19. Living as a ski enthusiast in Golden, BC, he spent his winters carving slopes and his summers pursuing work opportunities. As the ski season ended, Josh planned to return to Edmonton for the summer. That’s when fate – and a friendship with Myles McNally, now Manager of Water Services at GS – stepped in.
‘I was friends with Myles and living with his brother in Golden,’ Josh recalls. ‘Myles, who had started at GS the year before, told me about the company hiring. I rushed back to Edmonton for the interview the day after the ski hill closed, not wanting to miss the opportunity. Little did I know, the job wouldn’t start for another month!’
Josh began his GS journey in the EPCOR Water Division, working as a Labourer, Topman, and Pipelayer over his first four years. He then took on a Foreman role, leading a mini-crew, before life took an unexpected turn – an off-season snowmobiling accident resulted in a back injury. Unable to work in the field, Josh was offered a role as Project Coordinator, marking the beginning of his office-based career.
‘What kept me at GS in those first four years was the people and the culture,’ Josh shares. ‘I genuinely enjoyed the people I worked with and had fun at work every day.’
Adjusting to an office role wasn’t an easy transition. ‘Before my injury, I couldn’t imagine working at a desk—not anytime soon, at least. I loved being outdoors, facing challenges, and thriving in a fast-paced environment. Moving into the office initially made me nervous. I wondered if I’d miss the field and wanted to return as soon as I could. But it didn’t take long to realize the office side of GS was just as dynamic and challenging.’
Currently, Josh Amyotte holds the position of Project Manager and has dedicated 12 years to GS Construction. He continues to thrive in the dynamic and ever-evolving environment of his role. ‘The work is fast-paced and constantly evolving, with new challenges every day. No two jobs are the same, which means you’re always problem-solving and coming up with new ideas. I think there is something rewarding about driving the streets you have previously worked on knowing you played an important role in keeping the city running.’
Originally, GS was just a summer job while Josh pursued a Chemical Engineering Diploma at NAIT. However, after completing his first year of school and his second season with GS, Josh realized he had found his calling. He shifted his focus to Civil Engineering, earning a diploma in Civil Engineering Technology at NAIT. From there, his career with GS flourished, transitioning from the field to the office.
Josh’s story is one of adaptability, perseverance and passion for contributing to the communities GS helps build and improve. We’re grateful to have him on the Team and excited to share his journey with you.
